Alexander Hamilton, in Federalist No. 1, warns us “that a dangerous ambition more often lurks behind the specious mask of zeal for the rights of the people than under the forbidden appearance of zeal for the firmness and efficiency of government. History will teach us that the former has been found a much more certain road to the introduction of despotism than the latter, and that of those men who have overturned the liberties of republics, the greatest number have begun their career by paying an obsequious court to the people; commencing demagogues, and ending tyrants” (emphasis added).

He and the Founding Fathers feared the demagogue who would turn into a mob the democratic elements of society, using his connection with the people to sweep into government, undermine the republic, and end individual liberty.  They feared democracy producing a tyrant.

This site’s guiding philosophy — commence democrats and end tyrants — plays on Hamilton’s words while furthering the same goal: Promoting liberal values while warning readers of the destruction that demagogues bring.

PoliticalEdu offers political analysis and data with an eye towards combatting authoritarian ideas and politicians by advocating the liberal values that guarantee liberty for us all — the liberal values enshrined in our Constitution and history.
